At High Desert Medical College, our Clinical Medical Assisting program is designed to prepare students to enter the healthcare industry. Clinical Medical Assistants are critical allied health professionals, performing an assortment of duties in the offices of physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. This 34-week program provides students with intensive training emphasizing the use of the Electronic Health Records system, ICD-10 Medical Billing and coding, as well as venipunctures and EKG’s. Students also receive real-world on-the-job experience through an Externship.
In the Clinical Medical Assisting program you will learn how to:
- Verify patient information and health insurance
- Update and file patients’ medical records
- Record information in medical recordkeeping systems, such as the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system
- Complete and file paperwork such as surgical permission forms, health check forms and insurance paperwork
- Prepare the examination rooms
- Prepare and handle medical instruments and supplies
- Measure patients’ vital signs
- Administer medications and injections
- Collect and prepare specimens of bodily fluids and tissues for laboratory testing
- Prepare the patient for any scheduled procedures, and answer any questions they may have regarding the procedure
